Serving It Right Course in Vancouver: The 2026 Guide
If you're starting a bartending or serving career in Vancouver, Serving It Right is the first credential you'll need. This guide covers exactly what it is, how to get it, what the exam looks like, and most importantly, what comes after it.
Fine Art Bartending School has been training Vancouver bartenders since 1981. We've watched generations of students go through the SIR process, and we've built this guide around the questions we hear every week.
What is Serving It Right?
Serving It Right is the official responsible alcohol service program for British Columbia, administered by the BC government through go2HR. Every person who serves alcohol in BC — bartenders, servers, hotel staff, event bartenders, liquor store employees — must hold a valid SIR certificate.
The course exists because BC liquor laws place real legal responsibility on the person pouring the drink. If you over-serve a customer who then causes an accident, you can be personally liable. SIR teaches you how to recognize intoxication, refuse service, check ID, and handle situations that could otherwise put your job and your finances at risk.
How to get Serving It Right in Vancouver
- Go to responsibleservicebc.gov.bc.ca and register for an account.
- Pay the $35 fee, which covers your course access and three attempts at the exam.
- Work through the self-paced online modules. Most people finish in 3–5 hours.
- Take the 35-question multiple-choice exam. It's open book — you can refer to the course material as you go.
- Pass with 80% or higher (28 of 35 correct).
- Download your certificate. Save the PDF. Every employer will ask for it.
What's actually on the exam?
The SIR exam tests your understanding of five core areas. Knowing these in advance makes the whole experience easier.
- BC liquor law and licensee responsibilities — who is liable for what, and when.
- Intoxication recognition — the visible signs of impairment and BC's legal definition of intoxication.
- Refusing service — how to legally and professionally cut someone off.
- ID checking — what counts as valid ID in BC, how to spot fake IDs.
- House policies — minors, last call, and the documentation responsibilities of staff.
How much does Serving It Right cost in Vancouver?
Serving It Right costs $35 in 2026. That price includes three attempts at the exam. There is no separate course fee in Vancouver — the same online program is used province-wide. Some employers reimburse the cost once you're hired.
How long is Serving It Right valid for?
Your SIR certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue. To renew, you take a refresher course (also through the BC government portal) for a reduced fee. If you let your certificate lapse, you have to retake the full course.
Is Serving It Right enough to get hired as a bartender in Vancouver?
No — and this is the most common misunderstanding we encounter at Fine Art Bartending School. SIR makes it legal for an employer to hire you. It does not make you a candidate they want to hire.
Vancouver bars in 2026 don't train bartenders from scratch. They expect you to arrive knowing how to make the classics, work cleanly, handle a rush, and run a station without supervision. SIR teaches none of that — by design. It's a law course, not a craft course.
This is where the Commercial Bartender Certificate comes in. The combination of SIR plus a real hands-on bartending credential is what gets you trial shifts at the venues you actually want to work at. For the full comparison, see our Serving It Right vs. Bartending Certificate guide.
Serving It Right vs. ProServe vs. Smart Serve
Each province in Canada has its own responsible alcohol service certification, and none of them are interchangeable. Serving It Right is BC. Smart Serve is Ontario. ProServe is Alberta. If you're moving to Vancouver from another province, you'll need to complete SIR. Your existing certificate from another province does not transfer.
