Abbotsford's Week-Long Route Into the Bar Trade
Seven days behind a real 22-foot bar, then a certificate you can use anywhere from Clearbrook to downtown Vancouver.
The valley's biggest city, and no bartending school in it.
Abbotsford has more than 150,000 people, a university, an airport, a growing wine and craft beer industry, and nowhere local to get properly trained behind a bar. Our school is at 319 West Pender Street in downtown Vancouver, and students come in from Clearbrook, Historic Downtown, McCallum, Mt Lehman, Matsqui and out across Sumas Prairie.
The 7-Day Commercial Bartending Course is built for people with no experience. In one week you learn the standard recipes, the four core mixing methods, accurate pouring and how to work a bar under pressure, then earn the Fine Art Commercial Bartender Certificate. University of the Fraser Valley students and people already working in Abbotsford restaurants make up a good share of the room.
Getting to class from Abbotsford.
Driving in on Highway 1 takes around 75 to 90 minutes without traffic and considerably longer during rush hour, plus metered parking at the other end. Most people who drive go only as far as Carvolth Exchange in Langley or a Surrey park and ride, leave the car and take transit the rest of the way.
Without a car, the Fraser Valley Express runs from Abbotsford to Carvolth Exchange, where you pick up the 555 across the Port Mann to Lougheed Town Centre and then the SkyTrain downtown. It is a long trip, so allow around two hours and use the time. A number of our Abbotsford students book a week of accommodation in the city instead. Seven days of driving adds up in both hours and fuel, and staying over turns the course into one focused week rather than fourteen trips over the Port Mann.

Our Classroom Is a Real Bar.
There is no simulation involved. You work behind a real 22-foot bar at your own fully stocked station, using the same tools, bottles and glassware you will find in a working room. Because the classes are deliberately small, you get corrected in the moment instead of hearing about it at the end of the day.

Questions about the course.
Still deciding? Here are the things students most often ask before they sign up.
Do I need any experience?
None at all. The course is built for complete beginners, most students walk in having never made a cocktail. By Day 1 you're already pouring and building drinks behind the bar.
Do I have to memorise every recipe?
No, that's what the 7 days are for. Once you learn the ratio system on Day 2, you understand how drinks are built instead of memorising each one. By the exam, the key recipes are second nature.
What if I don't pass the exam on Day 7?
Unlimited free retakes are included in your $799, for life. There's no fee and no expiration. Plenty of students retake to sharpen up; it's a normal part of learning.
Do you use real alcohol in class?
No. We practise with coloured water so you can make 50+ drinks per class and focus on technique, recipes and speed, without anyone drinking on the job.
Will this actually help me get a job?
That's the goal. You finish with a recognised Commercial Bartender Certificate, a reviewed resume, interview prep, and access to our Vancouver Bartender Job Board where employers post openings.
Do I need Serving It Right (SIR) too?
SIR is a separate ~$35 BC government certificate to serve alcohol on the job. It's not part of our course (and isn't needed to attend, since we don't use real alcohol), but we recommend completing it before you start applying.
