About Tequila
Tequila is a one of the most popular spirits on the market. Unfortunately, it’s easily the hardest category to find brands that emphasize on quality.
It’s a costly spirit to produce, as the blue agaves used in distillation take seven years to fully ripen. Until 1989, Mixtos were king, as it was a cheaper alternative to produce.
100% pure agave tequilas have become the standard, but even so, many of these tequilas use artificial additives to cover up corners that were cut throughout the distillation process.
El Jimador Blanco
- Owned by Brown Forman Spirits
- 750ml for $35.99 CAD
- Country of Origin: Mexico
What makes El Jimador special?
El Jimador is what a standard tequila should taste like. It’s simple. And yet despite being cheaper than many “premium” tequilas, such as 1800 and Jose Cuervo Tradicional, we think it makes a much better tasting margarita.
Herradura Distillery
El Jimador is produced at the Herradura distillery, which has 150 years of experience producing quality tequilas. Both Herradura and El Jimador are commonly consumed in Mexico. If it’s good enough for the country that makes it. It’s good enough for us.
Epsilon Blanco
- Owned by the Campari Spirits
- 750ml for $44.99 CAD
- Country of Origin: Mexico
What makes Espolon special?
From 1998 to 2020, Espolon was regarded as one of the best tequilas for the price, as it was traditionally produced as one of the first additive free tequilas on the market.
New Distiller = New Tequila
Unfortunately, the head distiller passed away in 2020, and the recipe has changed. It’s still a great tequila for mixing margaritas, but it’s no longer one of the smoother tequilas to shoot. Maestro Dobel and Centenario Tequila are comparable alternatives.
Siete Leguas Blanco
- Owned by Juan Fernando Gonzales
- 750ml at $44.99 CAD
What makes Siete Leguas special?
Siete is the last of the major tequila families to remain family owned and operated and continue to produce their tequila the traditional way, despite it being a more time consuming and expensive process. Even though Siete is one of the best tequilas on the market, it continues to be sold at a more than reasonable price, as this success was earned without the help of an expensive marketing team.
The Original Patrón
A little known fact is that when Patrón first entered the American market, it was actually Siete tequila inside the bottles. There’s a long history there that we won’t get into here, but it’s worth looking into if you’re interested in how the first real tequila came to circulate outside of Mexico in 1989.
Volcan Blanco
- Owned by Moet-Henessy
- 750ml at $72.99 CAD
- Country of Origin: Mexico
What makes Volcan special?
Volcan is co-owned and operated by Moet-Hennessy Spirits Company and the Gallardo family. It’s a clean, easy drinking tequila that’s smooth enough to shoot, making it an excellent choice for margaritas.
100% Additive Free
It’s rare to find 100% additive free tequilas, but Volcan is one of them. The only downside is that many other 100% additive free tequilas of similarly qualities are significantly cheaper. Part of the price tag is attributed to a beautiful bottle. But it sure is nice.
El Tesoro
- Owned by Suntory Global
- 750ml for 129.99 CAD
- Country of Origin: Mexico
What Makes El Tesoro Special?
Founded in 1937, La Alteña remains one of the most respected tequila distilleries in Jalisco. One of the last distilleries to continue making tequila the traditional way, instead of modernizing to a faster, commercialized product.
Exceptional & Expensive.
El Tesoro is undoubtedly one of the best tequilas on the commercial market. They know it, and you’ll pay for it if you want to showcase these exceptional flavours in your cocktails. We think it’s well worth finding out what tequila is supposed to taste like.
Fortaleza
- Owned by Guillermo Erickson
- 750ml for $129.99 CAD
- Country of Origin: Mexico
What makes Fortaleza special?
Less than half the price of its competitors, Don Julio 1942 and Clase Azul, Fortaleza remains one of the most respected reposado tequilas on the market. It’s not an easy bottle to find sold in spirit retailers in Canada. In Vancouver, both Legacy Liquor Store and Keefer Bar have it available from time to time. It’s a tequila that’s worth sipping, and yet arguably makes the perfect margarita.
Still Family Owned After 5 Generations
Still operating as a small family company, Fortaleza continues to produce one of the best tequilas in the world without the premium $300 price tag that most other tequilas in this category charge.
