Serving It Right vs. Bartending Certificate: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Serving it Right is the license. A bartending certificate is the skill. Here's exactly what each one does and which Vancouver bars expect.

Quick Answer
You need both, and they do completely different jobs.

Serving It Right is the legal credential required by the BC government to serve alcohol. A bartending certificate is the professional credential bars look at when they're deciding whether to hire you. SIR lets you take the job; a bartending certificate lets you get the job.

Most beginner bartenders in Vancouver ask the same question: 'If I have Serving It Right, am I ready to bartend?'

The short answer is no. And the longer answer explains a structural shift in the Vancouver hospitality industry that most aspiring bartenders don't see coming.

Most bars don't train bartenders from scratch anymore. They expect you to know the basics โ€” classic cocktails, how to handle a rush, how to work quickly and cleanly behind the bar โ€” before you ever show up to a trial shift. That's where Fine Art Bartending School comes in. Our hands-on training is designed to get you comfortable with the real-world skills restaurants look for in a great bartender.

In Summary

Serving it Right

Mandatory, by law, to serve alcohol at licensed establishments. It does not get you hired, but you can't be hired without it.

Bartending School

Helps you go from zero to confident behind a bar. You gain the hands-on skills and practical experience needed to do the job.

Why this matters more in 2026

Ten years ago, a Vancouver bar might hire a fresh server with SIR, pair them with a senior bartender, and train them up over six months. That model is largely gone. Margins are tighter, turnover is faster, and the cocktail programs at most Vancouver venues, even casual ones, are now too complex to train someone from scratch on the job.

This shift is why the Commercial Bartender Certificate has gone from 'nice-to-have' to 'expected' for bartenders with no experience.

It's the credential that tells a hiring manager: this person can take a station tonight and not slow down the bar.

What if I already have bartending experience?

If you've worked behind a bar before โ€” even informally, even outside of Canada โ€” the math may be different. The hiring conversation in that case turns on whether you can demonstrate the skill, not whether you have a certificate. But for everyone else, the certificate is what closes the gap between 'I'd like to bartend' and 'someone hires me.'

What about online bartending courses?

There are dozens of online bartending courses. They're inexpensive, convenient, and largely worthless for getting a job in Vancouver. The reason: bartending is a physical skill. You cannot learn the muscle memory of building a Negroni, the timing of three cocktails being shaken simultaneously, or the choreography of working a station with another bartender by watching videos. Vancouver bar managers know this, and they discount online-only credentials accordingly.

The pattern we see: students who try the online-only route often come to Fine Art Bartending after six to twelve months of no callbacks. The fastest path to a bartending job in Vancouver is the in-person route โ€” which is why our program has been the local standard since 1981.

Which order should I do them in?

Either order works, but most of our students get Serving It Right first because it's a single afternoon and $35. Then they start the Commercial Bartender Course knowing they'll graduate with both credentials in hand and can start applying immediately.

Common Questions

Bartender Certification Courses

Can I skip Serving It Right if I take a bartending course?

+
No. Serving It Right is a legal requirement set by the BC government. No bartending school can issue it on your behalf or substitute for it. You must complete SIR through the official Responsible Service BC website.

Can I get a bartending job with just Serving It Right?

+
Technically yes. Legally there is no requirement to hold a bartending certificate. Practically, in Vancouver in 2026, it's very difficult. Most postings now list 'bartending experience' as a minimum requirement. Bartending school puts you in front of the pack of applicants with no experience behind the bar.

Does Fine Art Bartending include SIR?

+
No. SIR is administered directly by the BC government and we encourage students to complete it on their own through the official portal. It's the cheapest and fastest route. Our course focuses on the hands-on skills bars are actually hiring for.

How much will I spend in total to get fully certified?

+
Under $850. $35 for Serving It Right plus $799 for the Commercial Bartender Course at Fine Art Bartending. Most students recover that investment within the first few weeks of paid shifts.
